Ciprus 3.

Sajtok, sonkák, tészták, borok, fűszerek a legjobb minőségben. Az ebéd is egy kicsit rendhagyóra sikerül: megismerkedünk a görög tulajdonossal (Kimon Georgiou) és hosszasan beszélgetünk a magyar és egyéb borokról miközben folyamatosan rendeli nekünk a különleges kóstolókat. Mennzei spanyol sonka, érlelt francia brie sajt, friss spagetti, frissen sült focacchia oliva olajjal és füstölt (!!!) sóval.

Délután 2-től 5-ig tart az ebéd közben elfogy három üveg bor is, legemlékezetesebb a toszkán Il Brunello di Montalcino 1995-ös palack! Fantasztikus bor!

Cyprus 2.

Last night we visited the famous "Paragadi" fish tavern. In a small street, far from the center (3 Niovis street) with a half-open terrasse, fresh air, fresh fish food and friendly waiters - it's really a place to go, well above average quality... and quantity as well. I mean the food... you cannot imagine! We arrived at around 9.30 pm and left before midnight. Until that they just brought the food, always something new and tasty. I felt like being at the shooting of the
"La Grande Bouffe 2." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Grande_Bouffe), the second part of the famous French movie where they committed suicide by eating way too much. We all ordered a fish mezze, which practically means that they bring EVERYTHING they find in the kitchen. And they have a huge kitchen, I can tell. After 1 hour I was stuffed to death, but that was just the halftime. I thought that Kiri was joking saying that the "Big Fish" is just about to come at the end but it turned out to be true. I actually had enough after the first 20 minutes just eating the appetizer tarama, salmon, some other fish with oignons and some other dips + salad. But the mezze just started afterwards, the squid, the octopus, the mussel, two or three other fish dishes, the paella, some more fish with cheese and honey, pasta with feta and crabs some other things I don't remember and the Big Fish at the end with vegetables. Plus the dessert and the bottle of fine white wine from Cyprus. We were not prepared for that - I personally was about to die, but everything was very tasty and excellent quality and overall we payed less than 30 euros per person. It's really a superb restaurant!
This morning I have skipped breakfast. The lunch too. After a small sightseeing in the morning in Nicosia we went to Kyrenia (Girne in Turkish) a nice city and important harbour at the northern occupied part of Cyprus. I managed to pass the borderline with my expired passport, they didn't check it very carefully. On the other side everything is in Turkish, the official currency is the Turkish Lira but they accept euro (at a rate of 1 lira = 0.5 euro, however the official rate is 0.45). There are Turkish flags everywhere, they even have a huge one on the mountainside - you can see that from kilometers. There are boats going from the harbour to Turkey, the closest destination is Tasucu, just 60km away. The harbour is really nice, cool wind is blowing from the sea, the temperature is somewhat below 30 degrees. After few hours sightseeing we got back to Nicosia. Tonight we are going to taste some more local wine. I think I'll skip the dinner too. The Big Fish is still swimming in my stomach... :)

Ciprus 2.

Tegnap este meglatogattuk a "Paragadi" nevu halettermet. Felreeso csendes kis utca (3 Niovis street) felig nyitott terasz, friss levego, baratsagos pincerek es atlagon feluli minoseg... es mennyiseg!
Nehany oras varosnezes utan visszaterunk Nicosiaba.

Cyprus 1.

It's a strange view looking at Cyprus from above. The plane just arrived from the North, heading to the southern part of Cyprus: Larnaka. On the northern part there are oddly shaped mountains with very rare vegetation which disappears completely when approaching the coastal region. It's like a stone desert. There are huge white water reserves at the top of all buildings. When you run out of water you have to order. If it's not raining there are no water, maybe for months. So you better save the water...
Kiri took us from Larnaka to Lefkosia (the greek name of Nicosia). It turned out that the Games of Small States of Europe is just an ongoing event now in Cyprus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Games_of_the_Small_States_of_Europe) the hotel is packed with all the sportsmen..
There were some immediate surprises arriving to Cyprus. I didn't know about the driving on the left side. OK, I knew about Malta, but not Cyprus. They also have the Brittish type electric plug (we don't have adapters of course :) and everyone speaks English. I mean it. Even the local Cypriots have to speak English in the restaurants because they don't speak Greek. Strange indeed. No wonder that the Englishmen like to be here. It's just like home with a much better weather. Talking about weather, today it's 38 degrees in shadows. So we drink ouzo + ice cube + water long drink a lot. It's really cool. After some kebab, feta cheese, olives, pita dinner it's absolutely the best choice.
Kiri took us to a small village 30 minutes from Nicosia to the mountains. It's much cooler there, only around 30 degrees. We drink some ouzo long drink again and a few hundred meters from us they are just shooting the new episode of the popular local soap opera (~ "The pink goat"). The village is so ancient Cypriot it's part of the Unesco World Heritage program. Nobody's living here. It's only us drinking ouzo (did I already mention that ouzo is really good?) the tv staff and some tourists. Warm sunshine, cool breeze, it's really a great place to be.
Tomorrow we are going to visit the occupied territory of Nicosia. The norther part of the city (and of Cyprus) is occupied by the Turks since 1974. It's like Berlin was before the change... but they want to improve and the model could be the Belgian state model. Probably someone should tell them that it's not the best idea. Anyway... I'm not sure that I can pass the border with my Hungarian ID card. My passport just expired last month. We'll give it a try anyway...

Ciprus 1.

Ciprus igen fura latvany a magasbol: erdekes formaju hegyek, alig latni novenyeket, es a novenyzet a tengerpart fele egyre ritkul, olyan, mint egy kosivatag. A hazak tetejen mindenhol hatalmas feher viztartalyok. Ha elfogy a viz rendelni kell. Ha nincs eso - nincs viz. Olykor honapokig...
Kiri a repteren var bennunket, Larnakabol Lefcosiaba tartunk (Nicosia gorogul Lefkosia). A tegnapi kebabos, sult feta sajtos, olivabogyos, martogatos vacsora kozben felfedezett jeges ouzo-froccs ma is nepszeru, nyaron mindeki ezt issza, igazan klassz long-drink.
Holnap valoszinuleg megnezzuk a torokok altal megszallt varosreszt.
